Form follows Fido

Designer Alexa Wyman gives pet furniture a fun, sophisticated makeover.

In East Bay designer Alexa Wyman’s world, Fido doesn’t share the couch — he has one expressly made for him.

“When I was at Douglas Durkin Design we never created a dog bed for clients,” Wyman says.

She realized even the clunky cat tree in her own home was an eyesore. That observation sparked a thought: pet furniture could be ergonomically-sound and healthy, and deserved the same attention to form and function as any high-end interior. Soon after, Line Nine Pets was born.

“I’ve always loved animals,” explains the Salt Lake City native who has cared for everything from horses to a family of squirrels. And, after earning a design degree from CCA and spending fifteen years in Durkin’s atelier, she had the pedigree to merge refined aesthetics with technical precision — for pets.

Eighteen months of development followed, resulting in a debut collection for dogs and cats that’s equal parts chic and considered: a woven water-hyacinth bed surround and a painted tubular metal-frame “couch,” both customizable in a client’s fabrics as well as leather.

“I wanted to make sure the cushions performed beautifully,” she says. “Elegant, yes—but also comfortable and practical.” Each piece features washable, zip-off covers over eco-friendly biodegradable latex mattresses—durable, supportive, mite-resistant and effortlessly stylish, the kind that elevate a room rather than clutter it.
