Local Firms Stack Up Design Cred

The Swivel Counter stool by San Francisco’s Josh Duthie, echoes mid-century metal factory and office stools. Made to order of warm laminated poplar and walnut, it costs $850 at chairtastic.com

The made-in-San Francisco Umlauf mirror by Medium Small — inspired by the iconic pink supply pipes of Berlin’s enormous Umlauf water tank used for testing naval ship models — distorts reflections, the way moving water does. $1,585 at medium-small.com

In San Francisco, Medium Small’s Metal Moto chair is made from brake-formed steel. Its curved backrest is sand-cast and attached to the frame. The solidly designed chair can be stacked and is good indoors and out. $2,885 at medium-small.com

The versatile Drumm stackable stool by Sausalito’s Deap Design, made from recycled PET and glass fibers, is fine in the shower, as a bedside table or for extra seating. Four earthy colors can be playfully mixed or matched. About $590 through deapdesign.com.

Also from Deap Design, this elegant Pill desk has four curved pivot drawers made of bent plywood that give the painted piece its sculptural form. Through deapdesign.com.
